If you’re in the city for a few days and want to explore further than your legs can walk, why not try our public transport systems? Whether you want to stay in the city or travel further afield, our transport system is easy to use and very convenient. Here are our tips to explore Antwerp by public transport.

We know this technically isn’t public transport but we will start by saying, Antwerp is a very walkable city. You can get where you are going very easily on foot. All of our main attractions are within reasonable walking distance as well as our main shopping districts. There are plenty of walking tours to ensure you see the best of the city too.

The public transport system in Belgium is run by a government-funded company called De Lijn which not only connects Antwerp but all of the Flemish cities together, making it ideal for onward travel within the country. There are plenty of routes to get you around the city  and we have included some of the types of tickets below. You can buy discounted tickets from supermarkets, newsagents and at the designated ticket machines at the tram stops. You can also buy SMS tickets, but only if you have a Belgian sim card for your phone.

    Individual ticket 60 minutes €3.00

    SMS ticket 60 minutes €1.80 + €0.15

    Day Pass 1 day €6

The easiest and fastest way to get around the city is, of course. by bike. We have dedicated cycle lanes all over the city and it is the preferred means of transport for people travelling a short distance. By choosing to cycle, you are doing the environment, and your health a favour. Sign up and rent a bike at a very low cost from VELO, Antwerp’s public bike-sharing system. There are lots of pick-up and drop-off points around the city and prices start from as low as €4.00 a day.
